To give credit where it's due, Verdant Skies is one of the most inclusive games I've seen. Another of its selling points is the fact that its character creator doesn't require the player to select a gender. Plus, at least one of the other colonists has They/Them pronouns, and you can enter into polyamorous relationships with some of them (though others aren't so keen on the prospect, preferring to remain monogamous).
Perhaps the best improvement Verdant Skies makes on the farming sim formula is that there is no sleep deadline, i.e. you don't automatically pass out if you're not in bed by a certain time. You could, if you so wished, quite literally stay out working on the farm and gathering materials for days at a time, as long as you've got the food to keep your energy up, and as much as I love Stardew Valley and even World's Dawn, that's something which I felt was sorely missing from those games. It gives Skies a true sense of being able to relax, that Stardew and World's seemed just shy of mastering.
There are some downsides to all this bliss, however. Firstly, the area you're able to explore is not that big at all, and there's only the one. No separate areas for a village or beach or what have you. There are a couple of mines, but each consists of only one tiny cavern. Speaking of the mines, many of your crafting recipes require either rubies or sapphires, which you can only get (through random chance) by mining certain rocks, and even if you are lucky enough to get one of those gems, it takes a ridiculously long time for the rocks to respawn something to mine, which may or may not even be a gem. This means it takes forever and a day to build just about any major piece of machinery.
